Today, Tuesday September 21, immigrant youth and LGBTQ veterans and supporters, along with allies, will rally in front of Republican headquarters to respond to the Senate’s Tuesday vote on the FY11 National Defense Authorization, the intended vehicle-bill for the DREAM Act and “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal amendments.
Tuesday’s Senate vote decides the fate of two key civil rights amendments that promote American prosperity and values. The DREAM Act would offer a pathway to citizenship for immigrant youth brought to this country before the age of 16 and who have served at least two years in the military or in college. The repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” would allow for individuals, including active military and those wishing to enlist, to serve their country in the military without regard to their sexual orientation.
The Immigrant Youth Justice League invites you to join us at the press conference and rally and in taking the next steps necessary to pass the DREAM Act. The rally is part of an ongoing vigil held at the Republican Headquarters. The vigil may continue the rest of the week, depending on the vote in Washington. Passing the bill will mean continuing the vigil.
